Barbie is a life-like fashion doll that is manufactured by the toy company Mattel, Inc. The Barbie fashion doll was launched in 1959 and since then has had several changes, including additions to her family. There have been spin-offs and several other types of copyright infringements that has lead to various lawsuits.
Barbie is the figurehead of Mattel brand dolls and accessories. Barbie is also a part of a Doll family, with several collectible releases. Barbie has been a large part of the toy fashion doll market for fifty years.

Over the years Barbie has become a role model for young girls. When first introduced Barbie's dimensions were physically impossible to attain. The line of Barbie novels that were introduced with her, such as How to Lose Weight, gave ideas like "Don't Eat!" (What Would a Real Life Barbie Look Like). You could probably imagine that when parents found out they went straight for their lawyers. Since her introduction Barbie has sparked several controversies. The previous example is one of many, another is the "Malibu Stacy" from The Simpsons, or perhaps you've heard of the Bratz dolls; they too were cause for controversy.
